The early days of launching a fitness business are super exciting – and also overwhelming. Where to start and what to tackle first?

Want to turn your passion for fitness into a real-life business? The early days of launching a fitness business are super exciting – and also overwhelming. Don’t worry if you have absolutely no clue where to start or what to tackle first. Our library of free guides walks you through the first six months, from the planning stages to expanding the team. Read about it here, then scroll down for a link to all the guides.

Phase 1: Planning your business before it exists

Before you sign on any dotted line, it's important to have sensible plans. Phase one should include defining who you are, what you offer, and how you'll stand out in the crowded fitness marketplace.

First, take a deep dive into your niche, your offer, and what makes your business different. This self-reflection naturally leads to niching your business. Don't try to be everyone's cup of tea. Find your speciality and build on it.

With these fundamental decisions made, it's time to create your business plan. Think of this as your fitness business blueprint. It should include an executive summary (your business in a nutshell), market analysis (know your competition and target audience), services and pricing, marketing strategy, and financial projections.

And don't underestimate the importance of a solid onboarding process. This is your chance to make a good first impression and set clear expectations. A smooth onboarding experience means better time management, streamlined admin, and happier clients. Don't forget to include a solid client agreement.

Phase 2: The settling-in phase

You’ve launched your business. Now it's time to start growing. This phase is all about streamlining operations, freeing up your time, and getting the word out.

Start by organising how you do repetitive tasks. Set up systems to automate payments, bookings, financial management and client admin.

You’ll need to fill class schedules and PT sessions. When designing your class schedule, think like a client – they’ll want a balance of variety and continuity. Present your offers as a complete fitness journey that keep people in your business.

Marketing might seem daunting, but it doesn't need a big budget or the help of an agency. Get creative with low-cost strategies for SEO, social media, offline marketing, and word of mouth promo.

Phase 3: The growth phase

You've made it through the initial rush of starting a business, and it looks like you’re here for the long-haul. Now it's time to focus on sustainable growth and tackling the challenges that come with success.

One of the first hurdles you might face is dealing with problem clients. Learn to spot the red flags, handle difficult conversations, and part ways professionally if it comes to it.

As your business grows, you might find yourself expanding or needing to change locations. Communication with clients is key for bricks and mortar facility owners. Keep clients in the loop by making good use of social media, email, and in-person conversations. Listen to them and respond appropriately to make the move as smooth as possible.

Every fitness business faces seasonal slumps, but with some planning, you can maintain steady income throughout the year. Get creative with special promotions, challenges, or indoor alternatives to keep clients engaged despite the weather.

Big business success means big changes. At some point in the first 12 months, you might consider building the team with permanent coaching hires or ad-hoc instructors. This is a big step, so choose carefully, set boundaries, and make sure agreements are clear.
